Who Can Serve: Virginia's Rules Under Va. Code § 13.1-1015

• A business entity: a domestic or foreign stock or nonstock corporation, LLC, or registered LLP authorized to transact business in Virginia

In practice this means a helpful friend or relative who happens to live in Virginia cannot serve unless they hold one of those roles or a Bar license. Professional registered agent companies like us qualify as authorized business entities, which is the simplest path for most owners.

Virginia adds a wrinkle found almost nowhere else: a PO box is acceptable only for cities or towns with populations under 2,000 where no street address exists. Everywhere else, plan on a real street address, and the address must include the locality, meaning the county or independent city.
